Mineral Wool Insulation
Insulation considered aspect of home construction and plays a significant role in the energy efficiency and thermal performance of residential houses and commercial buildings.
Poorly insulated homes are not always easy to spot. Many houses have inadequate insulation that leads to high levels of heat transfer. This heat loss will lead to significantly higher energy usage, increased energy bills, poor indoor air quality, increased noise pollution, and home's carbon footprint.
What is Mineral Wool Insulation?
Mineral wool is a fiber made of natural or synthetic minerals or metal oxides, fiber-based, loose-fill insulation that has a similar appearance to fiberglass insulation, but it is made of natural materials instead of glass. It is a type of mineral wool created for high temperature insulation resistant to temperatures. It is a bit stiffer and denser and for many years, the most widely used type of insulation in North America and Europe.
Types of Mineral Insulation
In general, there are two main types of mineral wool insulation.
Stone Wool Insulation
This type of insulation is mainly made from natural stone fibers such as molten basalt or diabase, sourced from volcanic rock, melted at around 1,600°C. This melted rock is subsequently spun into "wool" and bound together by different resins and oils.
Glass Wool Insulation
The other type of mineral wool is glass wool. This type of mineral wool is made from molten glass. Glass wool is primarily made from recycled glass. The glass is melted in a furnace then sent to a spinner to create fibres. Glass wool fiber create millions of tiny air pockets which trap the air and create a thermal barrier against extreme hot or extreme cold.
Slag Wool Insulation
Slag wool is made of fibers manufactured by melting the primary component, blast furnace slag. Slag is a waste product in the production of steel. This type of wool insulation are made with combination of natural rock or combination of molten slag and natural rock and even glass. Typically, mineral or stone insulation contains up to 90% recycled content.
Advantages of getting Mineral Wool Insulation
- Mineral wool is naturally moisture-resistant.
- Thermal insulation - achieve excellent levels of thermal insulation.
- Outside noise is blocked much more by mineral wool, so the interior of a building suffers less acoustic invation.
- Compressive strength and easy to install
- Mineral wool performs as a fire barrier, slowing down house fires - Mineral wool will not burn until temperatures reach beyond 1,800°F (1,000°C).
- Provides Indoor Air Quality
